Holiday Open House at Old Town Antiques

s promised, here are a few shots of the Holiday Open House at Old Town Antiques in Duluth. These beautiful booths belong to Sarah Holm (photos above & below) and Krista@Snowman Hill (last three photos). I'm sure you will agree that their booths are outstanding! Well done, girls!

SHOP UPDATE:

Junkologie has recently expanded into more space at Old Town Antiques. In addition to the upstairs space (up the stairs, take a left, half way down on your right side), there is a whole new room on the main floor (from the front door, go straight back as far as you can and hang a right) outfitted with Junkologie goods. As of the holiday party, the new space was in a sad and sorry state (Not joking! I have photos to prove it but I am too embarrassed to post them!). Since then, the space has received some love and attention. I will be bringing in even more new items this Sunday!

SPECIAL NOTE: Everything with a Junkologie tag is 20% off right now. In fact, most vendors throughout the store are doing some form of discount this month.

he countdown to Christmas is on! We are having an open house at Old Town Antiques in Duluth, MN, tomorrow night. It's my first time involved in it, so I'm not sure what it's all about. I think it will be more of a social time than anything. It is by invitation only, so if you didn't receive an invitation, don't be mad...I've simply been handing them to people as I see them. It seems like most of the junkers I know are everywhere in the country but here. Wish you were closer!! I'll be sure to post some photos!

Junking Runs in the Family

y father-in-law makes fabulous creations from salvaged barn lumber and mirrors. This past summer, he surprised me with this official Junkologie sign. He even etched the mirror himself. He is brilliantly handy...a gift that I am grateful he passed on to his son!

Below is one my favorite photos of him sporting his Junkologie shirt and pink tools at the Junkologie Blog Party 2009 at the Oronoco show...

t was a true gathering of friends at this fall's Gathering of Friends Antique Show. It was held at Bachman's flagship store in Minneapolis. This was my first time attending the show, and I was thrilled to see some of favorite vendor friends...Jan of Summerspell, Jane@Mustard Moon, Cindi@The Nature of It, Pam of Pam's Picks, and Deb@Haupt Antiek. My only treasure from this show was the sign in the first photo. Love it? I knew you would! I haven't decided where to hang it yet, but I have some ideas. Enjoy the junk!!

ne of my favorite pastimes is photography. Not just photos of anything and everything, but specifically of junk, collections, and architecture. The shapes, colors, and patterns created by intentional and unintentional mixing of materials is inspiring. Capturing these moments in time from my perspective is a form of creativity that fuels me like no other!! What better place to get my photo and junking fix than a flea market, occasional sale, or similar venue? None better, I'd say!

The photos above are the second in a series of photos taken at The French Flea Occasional Sale. The jewelry is crafted by Gretchen@Mimi-Toria's Designs. The other images are some vignettes around the store. I'm not a professionally-trained photographer, but I hope you enjoy the images.

While I do bring home plenty of thrifty treasures on a regular basis, I also bring home hundreds of digital thrifty treasures...my photos. They inspire me, teach me, remind me of a fond memory, and connect me to the friends I met that day. These are the real treasures of junking! Texas Antique Weekend Fall 2009

We had a wedding in Texas during the preview weekend of the Texas shows, which meant we were able to sneak over to Warrenton/Round Top for a day of junking and visiting with fellow junkers. hoa, Nellie! The folks at Hunt & Gather know how to put on an event! The displays were amazing, and I had a blast working with many of them to set up the vignettes. I learned so much just by observing them in action. Now, I guess attendance was very low compared to their spring show. Was it the cold weather, the time of year, the economy, or the competing events? Who knows! This business is so unpredictable!!

No matter what, everyone is a winner when it comes to finding a prize at this show! I enjoyed working and playing with this group of creative people. I was also able to stay with my fab friend Lani@Cottage Elements, snap photos at the French Flea occasional sale and the Gathering of Friends show, and visit with junk queen Sue@JunkMarket, junk jewelry designer Gretchen@Mimi-Toria's Designs, and the fun girls of JunkFest (who drove all the way from North Dakota!!). I made lots of new friends as well!

unt & Gather. Come find your prize! If you are a junker and a resident of Minnesota, it is highly unlikely that you haven't shopped with, or at least heard of, the fabulous shop called Hunt & Gather. The fine folks you see in the photo above are masters of display and creativity. A visit to their store is truly an experience in which you will lose track of time hunting and gathering all kinds of unique and fabulous finds.

Their booth at Junk Bonanza was an extension of their store...a delicious crispy junk crust filled with ooey, gooey junk filling! You never know what is on the menu, but you always know you are in for a treat! Join me on a tour of their booth...

Ready for the exciting news? I'm heading down to the Twin Cities this week to participate in Prize...an antique show and sale hosted by Hunt & Gather. I am honored to be invited as a vendor!

My friend, Lani@Cottage Elements, and I will be bringing some fabulous pieces to sell. We're pulling out all the stops and bringing the best of the best, the creme de la creme, the pinnacle of junking goodness from our stashes. You do not want to miss this, junkers!! With the ultimate junk yumminess that the Hunt & Gather folks will undoubtedly bring, mmmmmm...can you taste it? Pure junk heaven!!

Prize starts on Thursday night (4-9 pm) with a fabulous open house. I heard there is wine and cheese involved, too! Food AND first pick of the goods? Definitely worth the $5 early bird admission!! We are also open all day Friday and Saturday, 8 am to 5 pm...with everything 20% off on Saturday. It's being held at St. Paul Episcopal Church (see address above).

hew! Welcome to the long-overdue (but much-awaited, I'm sure) report on Junk Bonanza 2009! Talk about a meeting of the junking minds! You Texas girls take note (you know who you are!)...both Margo and the Red Shed Girls made the trek. I'll be expecting the rest of you to join us next year!!

t's official. I am the queen. That's right. No question about it! How do I know? Tricia said so!! Who's Tricia? She's the Zookeeper over at The Boutelle Family Zoo. She officially awarded me with the "Because I'm the Queen" award!! And I'm not one to argue about such things!!

Love the juxtoposition between the "junk" serving pieces and the elegant "foodie" menu you have tossed together. Who says junkers don't potluck in style? Not me!! Very classy entry...Congrats!
My fave! It sounds so junky elegant (even though there aren't pictures, I could picture this entry, out in someone's backyard under a shade tree on a little farm table, a nice breeze and lots of sunshine - ok...back from my "daydream") I guess I'm trying to say - nice detail) - and also a great little menu for a hot summer day - served up in some interesting vintage containers!

WINNER #2: MIDGE@HAVIN' FUN WITH JUNK (AND LIFE IN GENERAL) for this entry:

If I were REALLY there, I would be staying at a hotel (I'm from Michigan) so I would make dishes well suited to crock pots, fridges, etc. I would crock a batch of my killer baked beans and serve them in a bowl that sets inside the bottom half of a globe atop a metal stand. I'd insert a sign that says "Out of this World Baked Beans". But, junkers do not live by beans alone, so I would whip up a decadent, chocolately trifle and serve it in a glass loaf pan (actually I'd do a few--it would go fast). I would set this in the removed keys area of a typewriter. In the roller I would place a paper that says "Yum. Yum." or something similar. Wish I was there.

NOTE: Midge took it a step further and actually made her ideas a reality!! Check out her JunkMarket Style post to see the Out of this World Baked Beans and typewriter projects!!

Here is a "taste" of what the judges said about Midge's entry:

I love a good sense of humor so the "Out of This Word Baked Beans" served in a globe brought a smile to this junkin' face. But really, you had me at the chocolate! Nice work...Cheers!
I do love her ideas for containers and the signs sound cute as well! The typewriter is a very unique idea - and a chocolate trifle...yummo!! A very fun potluck offering!
Love the idea of the half globe used as a bowl. I've often heard chocolate trifles are best served inside vintage typewriters so I'd be first to give it a taste. Very cool idea and bet it looks cute as ever!

ow do you like my centerpiece for the Junkologie Blog Party Junk Potluck? It's easy to re-create...a silver platter, lots of bones picked up at an auction, and some fun letters. It might not be your cup of tea, but it sure garnered some attention from shoppers and some good-natured ribbing (Ha! Get it?) from blog party attendees! Above it, I hung a brass light fixture piece and added a touch of floral. Let they party begin!

JunkMarket Guru Sue Whitney

was a highlight of the Junkologie Blog Party 2009. Sue, owner of JunkMarket and author of multiple junking books (most recently Junk Beautiful Outdoor Edition), is always the star of the show no matter where she goes. People came on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to meet her in person. We were lucky to have her for two hours during the blog party. She signed books, gave hugs, and chatted it up with her junking fans. She also posed for plenty of photos!! Here is what I caught with my camera...

Oronoco Gold Rush Days 2009

t has been whirlwind week of junking excitement! Oronoco Gold Rush Days was a hot (literally and figuratively!) success. If you missed it this year, get the 2nd Annual Junkologie Blog Party on your calendar for 2010!!

Let's start by saying that we (Ron and I) had a lot (that's L-O-T) of junk. Seriously. We had so much junk that I barely had time to take photos. And you know how much I love to be working the camera!! We were busy setting up, arranging, selling, etc. We pulled new stuff out of the trailer all weekend long.
